Chair (W3) of Theoretical Philosophy

At the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science, the Institute of Philosophy invites applications for the Chair (W3) of Theoretical Philosophy
to be filled at the earliest possible date.

Tasks

The chair represents theoretical philosophy in research and teaching across as broad a range of topics as possible. It will establish and strengthen the field of theoretical philosophy. The chair plays a central role at the Institute of Philosophy, within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science and in interdisciplinary contexts at TUD. The chair’s research focus lies in one, preferably two, distinct subfields of theoretical philosophy (e.g., metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of language).
In teaching, the chair is integrated into the curricula of all degree programs offered by the Institute of Philosophy, including teacher training programs. Your responsibilities will include teaching an introductory course in logic, an introductory course in theoretical philosophy, and an advanced course in theoretical philosophy. Additional teaching responsibilities include supervising and grading state examination theses, conducting oral state examinations, and participating in the further development and internationalization of the degree programs.
The chair’s responsibilities also include participation in academic self-governance as well as in the committees of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science and TUD.

Requirements

We seek a dynamic and dedicated individual (m/f/x) who represents theoretical philosophy at an internationally outstanding level, as evidenced by a portfolio of publications with international visibility. The candidate should have experience and expertise in at least one of the following areas: logic, metaphysics, epistemology, or philosophy of language. Experience in securing external funding is desirable, as is a willingness to contribute to the faculty’s research priorities as well as to TUD’s collaborative research projects and interdisciplinary research initiatives. A particular interest in epistemic questions related to knowledge processes, along with strong interdisciplinary connections to the science studies is expressly encouraged. The successful candidate will be distinguished by a strong ability to collaborate and work effectively with others.
The successful candidate will have proven teaching skills and extensive experience in independent instruction. The ability and willingness to teach courses in English are required. Experience and commitment to supervising doctoral students are important to us. Initial experience in developing new academic programs is desirable.
Your active participation in academic self-governance is a given. A reflective working style, cooperative spirit, strategic thinking, a strong sense of responsibility, and the ability to lead interdisciplinary and diverse teams effectively complete your profile.
The requirements for appointment, the official duties and the administrative status are governed by §§ 59, 69, 71 of the Act on Higher Education Institutions in the Free State of Saxony (SächsHSG) and the Saxon Regulation on Official Duties at Higher Education Institutions (HSDAVO). The chair can be filled either through a civil-servant appointment or an employment contract.
