Ein Service für Studierende und Alumni der TUD

Technische Universität Berlin
Faculty III - Process Sciences, Institute of Biotechnology / Applied and Molecular Microbiology

Research Assitant

part-time employment may be possible

Your responsibility

The research topic is at the cutting edge of fungal science, filamentous growth, macromorphology, and sustainable production. The project is funded for 36 months from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft under the supervision of Professor Cairns. The work will establish how pelleted morphologies of Aspergillus niger emerge during fermentation, and how their internal structure impacts production of protein and citric acid. This project will develop a library of mutants, conduct extensive phenotypic screens, quantitatively assess the impact of their encoded proteins on growth, and generate transcriptional networks to probe the underlying processes. The candidate will collaborate closely with national collaborators to establish genetic control of pelleted growth, structure, and productivity.

Your profile

  • Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in biotechnology or a closely related field
  • Practical laboratory experience working with Aspergillus niger and using microbiological or molecular biology methods
  • Experience in screening fungal strains or transformants using molecular or biochemical assays
  • Experience in analytical methods, that is, HPLC and LC–MS for the analysis of proteins or metabolites
  • Good command of German and/or English required; willingness to learn either English or German is expected
  • Experience in preparing and analysing fungal cell samples, RNA extraction, protein extraction and/or purification is desirable
  • Experience in optimizing novel assays for analysis of fungal growth is desirable
